In the town of Säffle was officially awarded City status, the last place for this to occur in Sweden. This was abolished in and Säffle is now the seat of the much larger Säffle Municipality.
History
[edit]Säffle's main growth as a town took place after the building of a canal in which allowed boats to safely bypass a section of turbulent vatten and rapids in the Byälven river.
In the railway came, linking Säffle with both the west and east coasts, the capital huvudstaden and the busy port of Gothenburg. This enabled Säffle to transport her wood products and the village soon became a thriving town.
In Säffle had a population of inhabitants. Today, Säffle municipality has 16, inhabitants (1 January ).
According to legend, the Viking Olof Trätälja settled and lived in Säffle. Streets, churches, and a lot of other places are named after him.

Säffle är en tätort i Säffle distrikt i Värmland och centralort i Säffle kommun med något över 9&#; invånare (31 dec ). Säffle ligger vid Byälven, som förbinder Glafsfjorden med Vänern, och genomkorsas av Norge/Vänerbanan, Europaväg 18 och Europaväg

Historik
[redigera | redigera wikitext]Staden ligger vid Vänern och det finns forntida fynd som talar för att det har varit en boplats sedan järnåldern. Området kring Byälvens nedre lopp har varit attraktivt för bosättning sedan flera årtusenden. Under Gustav Vasas tid omtalas Säffle som en viktig handelsplats, då bland annat Mormässo marknad hölls där årligen i slutet av september månad. Under talet hölls marknader på den plats som nu kallas för Knusesund, under äldre tider Knussedh. Dåtidens Säffle avsåg Säffle herrgård, någon kilometer söder om centrum. Det finns olika teorier om ursprunget till ortens namn. En är att Säffle kan härledas som ’sä-fugl’, dvs. sjöfågel(-viken). En annan är att namnet är en sammandragning av det äldre Sifhälla.
