Swedish braised red cabbage (rödkål) is a classic part of the Swedish Christmas table. This braised red cabbage is tender, sweet and tangy with a hint of warm holiday spice. It tastes good served either hot or cold and makes a wonderful side dish that complements other Christmas dishes!

    What is Rödkål

Braised red cabbage, or rödkål in Swedish, is a traditional Scandinavian side dish served during holidays (especially Christmas) and other occasions and get togethers. You’ll find it on almost every julbord (Christmas buffet).

Rödkål is made by slowly simmering finely shredded red cabbage with brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and red currant jelly until tender. It’s seasoned with warm spices like cinnamon, allspice, cloves, or even bay leaves, giving the sweet and tangy cabbage a wonderful holiday flavor. Every family has its own unique take on this dish, so there really are countless ways to prepare it. This is our family&#;s version.

I wasn&#;t sure whether I found the cabbage a bit too sweet for my liking, I am undecided. That&#;s just my personal preference, I might prefer slightly more acidity and less sweetness. Next time I will half the about of syrup.
